(Washington, D.C.) It is November 9, 2016. The U.S. Presidential election has been decided. America has awakened to a time in our history that seems unthinkable to half the citizens of our great country and consequently stunned the world. The Republican candidate who never missed an opportunity to divide, demean and discourage those who have admirably served our country in all walks of life has been elected to the most powerful position of the free world. The candidate who has never served or shown to work for the betterment of our neighborhoods, communities, or joined hearts with the disadvantaged people of our country, persuaded the majority of voting Americans that he actually cared about them.
In the days ahead we as Americans will have the responsibility to move forward. But it won’t necessarily be easy. In the hours of reflection that we face as we look to the future, we can be heartened by the fact that our country has always made it through difficult times throughout our young history. Although it may be impossible to understand in the moment, God is always working and refining us as individuals and as a country.
How could it have happened? Our present culture of leaving God out the equation has surely helped define what has happened…the unthinkable. We can pray to heal ourselves and then zero in on our strategy to include working to restore our country to encompass the love and goodness that God intended for us.
We will overcome this setback. The Russian interference will be brought out into the sunlight. The criminality and collusion with the Russian government will be revealed in due time. There can be no question that this election was undermined and influenced by Russia and certain members of the Trump campaign, including Donald Trump.
We will move onward and upward continually for the greater good and seek not to allow darkness to eclipse the light…but rather for light to reveal it. With God’s grace we will find the humility, grace and wisdom to overcome any force who would seek to divide us as an inclusive, loving people and country. Anyone who would seek to divide the citizens, and undermine the American media cannot be trusted. We, as sisters and brothers brought together at this time in history, will overcome this chapter in history.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has inspired millions and given insight in times of uncertainty. His life and words serve as always to enlighten us:
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. ~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
